'Monkey' 1999 solid bronze limited edition sculpture by Olivia Clifton-Bligh (born 1971) signed and numbered 1/9 to lower back; 230mm high, 200mm wide and 235mm deep.
She is a sculptor working in bronze, paper, wax and clay and a printmaker specialising in linocut and woodcut techniques.
Working in Britain's rural West Country, she explores indigenous country lore, both ancient and emerging. By integrating closely observed botanical and zoological studies with the rich metaphorical language of narrative traditions, her work reflects on our historical and changing relationships with the natural world.
She is a resident artist at Bull Mill Arts, an artists' community established by Lord Bath on the Longleat Estate. Her Wiltshire studio is on the banks of the lovely River Wylye and her Cornish studio is in a deep wooded coastal valley. Her sketch books are filled with the flora and fauna of the surrounding landscape, water meadows, ancient woodland, open pasture and historic parkland. These notebooks have become her zoographical and narrative reference library for her studio work.
She studied Art and Art History at Goldsmiths' College (BA Hons 1990-93) and her work is exhibited in London and throughout the UK. She is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and a member of the Printmakers Council and the Bath Society of Artists.
